Hello. I got an critical error. Please help ;(

When I start RIK, the RIK.exe says : "The procedure entry point K32EnumProcesses could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL"

Can I play RIK on Vista?

I haven't tested it on Vista, no. From what I read about the error, you need Windows 7 or higher. Although earlier versions of RIK.exe did run on Vista. Which makes me wonder, is this when you try connecting from the Play page, or when you're running the game directly?

Because there wasn't enough topics about this.

>>Dinius

Thank you for your reply.

>is this when you try connecting from the Play page, or when you're running the game directly?

The error occures (on the console) whenever the RIK.exe is started, either from the play page or directly.

>Although earlier versions of RIK.exe did run on Vista.

Nice! Can I get the earlier versions of RIK from any pages here, or could you give it me?

Check your PMs. Sent you an old alpha test version I had laying around. Might not work at all, but if it does then at least that's something to go on (you wont be able to play online etc with it, at least not comfortably, it's just to see if it works or not). Let me know :)

I appreciate you gave me the old version. I replaced the files, but nothing changed sadly ;(

>earlier versions of RIK.exe did run on Vista

Does it mean the alpha test version worked well on your Vista system? If it does, I don't know what is wrong, what is difference...

I think it wont be able to work on Vista anyway. I'm just planning upgrade the OS to 7 :(

I'm not 100% certain that exact version worked on Vista. I don't have any of the versions that are old enough that I know they worked there.

But yeah, upgrading to Windows 7 is probably the smartest thing you can do, Vista is hell compared to 7. :)

Some things you CAN try though

  1. Make DAMN sure Vista is is fully up to date, with the latest service packs and everything.
  2. Try intsalling this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.a...

Aside from that, I can look into it a bit more later today or so :)

Why should your game need EnumProcesses?

enums are an integral part of any system and programming languages . There's many reasons you would need this . I'm sure dinius will figure it out .

Tiny update, just for the record:

RIK.exe doesn't use enumprocesses. The issue which caused the problem has been fixed.

RIKlauncher does use enumprocesses, via .net, which is a bit different. And it does this to check if RIK.exe is already running, at which point it'll ask you if you're sure you want to start it twice.

Piercy : EnumProcesses is a winapi function, distinct from the concept of an enumeration structure. It has legitimate uses (Dinius mentions one), but a game generally wouldn't need it.

Dinius : I see, thank you for clarifying. I assume the launcher is optional :)

You don't _NEED_ the launcher to run the game, no. You can set your auth key manually like mentioned here, and then connect directly using the ID names for the servers, e.g. /connect nl1 (hover the servers to see IDs).

The problem, would be keeping your game up to date. You'd either need to..

  • Run the launcher manually with every new update
  • Run the INSTALLER for every new update
  • Manually keep track of the changed files and download them from here https://projectrik.com/install/ .. Would usually just be the RIK.exe and the DLL files in Data/, but other files may change as well, so you might have to compare checksums or something, which would be a pain.

As a side note, the launcher doesn't do much in terms of resources or anything like that. I just opens up, downloads changed files from the link given above, and closes down without hanging around in the background or anything like that. :)

I installed all the windows updates including options to my Vista. I also installed the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable. But it did not work. However, I noticed that I can launch the RIKdev and Radiant without any errors. Finally, I can enjoy design a map, only... :(

Just to be sure here, can you run RIK.exe? (RIK.exe an RIKlauncher.exe are separate)

Looked into it some more, sent you a custom build of the current version, check your PM. I think it ought to work :)

I checked the PM and installed the files. That works perfectly!

I'm playing some tutorials, the game looks like working smoothly without any errors.

I may report some bugs or fixable issues if I find it.

Thank you a lot for your kindness. I'll enjoy it! :)

Np, good to hear :) Have fun
